Table Reading Questions

1.The novel Fahrenheit 451 begins : “It was a pleasure to burn.” Why does Ray Bradbury start the novel in this way? Why might it be more pleasurable to burn books rather than read them? 
He starts the novel this way because he wants to illustrate the allusion that books are not to be read in that society because no one is allowed to read. For the people living in that society it is more pleasurable to burn books rather than to read them because books are considered evil rather than for knowledge. 

2. In the opening scene, why are the books compared to birds? 
Their compared to birds because when the book pages are burning they look like wings of a bird flapping up and down.

3. Discuss the difference between Montag and Clarisse’s lives. 
Montag lives in a house with his wife. He also is a normal citizen with a job as a firemen. You can say that Clarisse is the total opposite of Montag because she is a crazy seventeen year old that cares about nature.

4. Montag’s television includes headphones called “seashells.”  The “wall to wall circuit” allows Mildred to enter the “play” and, therefore, the television programming. How does the technology within the novel compare to our current technology? In the first pages of the novel,does technology improve the quality of life for Montag and his wife, Mildred? Why or why not? 
Our current technology can be compared to the technology from Fahrenheit 451 because in the novel they talk about things such as the huge wall televisions. But in our current technology that can be known as billboards. Technology does improve Mildred's life because she is so addicted to getting  instructions from a screen that she doesn't even care about her surroundings which is the real life. 

5. Why does the narrator introduce us to Montag at this time of his life, when he encounters Clarisse and confronts Mildred’s overdose? 
I think that the narrator introduces us to Montag in this stage of his life because he is in a way foreshadowing that technology is the only way to control humans in this society. 

6. Why does the author introduce the character of Clarisse before Mildred? 
He introduces the character of Clarisse before Mildred because Clarisse can help Mildred become a little more open about leaving all that technology and become book smart. 

7. Why are all the houses fireproof in this society? 
All the houses are fire proof because since they burn books all the time they want to be safe about not burning any homes. 

8. Why does Mildred require emergency service? What service is provided? 
She requires emergency services because she always tries to overdose. 

9. What is the mechanical hound and what is its purpose? 
A mechanical hound is a dog shaped robot with eight legs and its purpose is to kill anyone that disobeys this society's laws. 
10. Why does the society consider Clarisse “anti-social”? 
They consider her "anti-social" because she knows a lot about books while everybody in the society doesn't. They just categorize her for knowing things that nobody else knows. 

11. When the woman’s house is raided, why does she light the match? 
She lights the match because she just wants burn her house down. 

12. Describe the relationship between Montag and Mildred. 
There relationship is complicated because Montag doesn't feel attracked to Mildred anymore. Mildred is to into all the pills she is taking that she can't really pay to much attention to Montag.
